Why Family Photography is the Ultimate Mother’s Day Present

Family photography is not only about taking family portraits. It is so much more. Family photography is about capturing a moment in time, documenting connections between your family members (and your pets), and cherishing a moment in time which you can share with family members in years to come and pass down generations.

A Relaxed Experience in Your Favourite London & Surrey Locations

I offer relaxed family photography that takes place where your family feels most at home. I want to give you an opportunity to spend time together to slow down, connect and enjoy being in each other’s company. Whether that is outside in nature on your favouite woodland walk, on the beach, in your favourite park (like Richmond park or Wimbledon Common), or in the comfort of your own home. We can also arrange to spend a part of the session outdoors, and the second part indoors.

Fun for the Whole Family (Including the Kids & Dogs!)

The photo session itself is relaxed, easy going and fun. My goal to make everyone feel comfortable, and to take natural, genuine photos of a family having a good time. I will normally encourage your children to show me what their interests are, engage them in a game of hide-and-seek or ask them to run, jump or do cartwheels. I will offer ideas, gentile guidance and background suggestions but otherwise leave you to interact, play and enjoy each other’s company. Surrey Pet Photographer | Autumnal Dog & Owner Photo Shoot in Lightwater Country Park

Autumnal Dog Photo Session

Autumn is my favourite time of year for family and pet photo shoots. The light is softer, the colours are warmer and the air is filled with autumnal scents. Nature is slowing down and in the process creating the most wonderful experience for all the senses.

Surrey Dog Photographer at Lightwater Country Park

My client received a dog photography gift voucher from her family, and wanted to arrange a dog photo session with me at Lightwater Country Park in Surrey. We met at the car park and went on a circular walk, through the beech forest, past a heather hill, golden brown brecken and through the woods again. The stunning backdrops were plentiful and provided ample opportunity for portraits, action shots and portraits of my client and her pooch together.

Dog Photography Gift Vouchers

If you would like to purchase a dog photography gift voucher, please get in touch or visit my store. Photography gift vouchers are a fantastic present for a dog lover. They make unique and meaningful anniversary, birthday or Christmas presents.

Family & Pet Photography in the Surrey Hills | Natural Outdoor Family Photos with Dogs

A Morning With a Family and Their Romanian Rescue Dog | Family & Pet Photography in the Surrey Hills

I was recently contacted by a lovely lady who received a photography gift voucher for a family photo session with their Romanian rescue dog. It’s always such a joy when people want to include their pets in a family photo session, especially rescue animals, who so often have such moving stories behind them. I was delighted and honored to have been asked to document this family’s memories.

After chatting through a few ideas, we decided to meet early one summer morning at National Trust Abinger Roughs and Netley Park, tucked away in the beautiful Surrey Hills. It’s one of those places that always feels just a little bit magical - peaceful, full of texture, and with enough space to let everyone (including the dog!) breathe and explore.

We chose an early start to avoid the crowds and give the dog a calm, quiet environment to settle into. The morning began overcast with soft, diffused light filtering through the trees - which is actually a photographer’s dream! Then, just as we were getting into our stride, the clouds parted and sunlight began to spill through the canopy. Perfect timing for dreamy family portraits!

Natural outdoor family and pet photography session in Surrey

With family sessions, I always like to begin with a few “together” shots. These are often the anchor of the session; images that show connection, closeness, and the little dynamics that make each family unique. Once I have those in the bag, we can relax a bit more, and that’s often when the real magic begins.

Natural Outdoor Family Portraits with Pets

This family was a joy to photograph - warm, patient, and so caring for their dog, who had clearly come a long way since being rescued. It is always moving to see how much trust and love can develop between people and animals, and I think it really came through in the photos.

I also wanted to capture the bond of the little girl with her mum, so I observed their interaction and documented a few frames of the real genuine moments between the pair. And I couldn’t resist a portrait of their canine friend. The dog gradually relaxed, and I managed to capture some tender images of him looking up, eyes full of loyalty and affection.

As we wandered through woodland paths, we came across an area of wide open meadows, where cows were grazing in the distance. I noticed a fallen tree surrounded by wild flowers so I thought this would be a great scene to document the family relaxing and enjoying each other’s company - the laughter, the playfulness, the small gestures of care.

Pet Photographer in Surrey – Capturing Connection and Character

There’s something quietly powerful about photographing people and their pets. It’s not just about pretty portraits, it is about capturing a bond, a rhythm, a sense of belonging. This session was a gentle reminder of just how meaningful those connections are.

I left the Surrey Hills that morning with a full heart, a camera full of images, and a renewed love for what I do.

Couple & Dog Photo Session in Queens Park, Paddington | London Dog Photograph

Senior Pet Photography in London

Meet Dublin! A sixteen year old terrier cross with a spark in his eye and a spring in his step! Full of character, joy and that irresistible zest for life - he was livelier than a lot of dogs half his age. His owners reached out to me as they had received some worrying news about his health, and they wanted to capture some photographs of him while he was still feeling well. It was a bittersweet request, one I always approach with the deepest care and respect. These sessions are never easy, but they’re incredibly meaningful.

You wouldn’t guess Dublin’s age just by watching him. Despite everything, he was bouncy, curious and eager to explore. We arranged to meet at Queens Park, west London as this was one of Dublin’s favourite walking spots. The park had a great mix of paths, open spaces and quiet corners so felt big enough and varied enough in terms of photography backgrounds, but was also meaningful to the couple.

Outdoor Pet & Couple Photography

We began the session with a gentle walk along a tree-lined path tucked into one corner of the park. I always guide my clients a little during these early moments, just enough to help them feel at ease and forget about the camera. This enables me to capture my clients relaxed, enjoying each other’s company and being present.

Dog Portrait Photography

Not far from the path, we found a large fallen log—just the right place to pause for some individual portraits. Once up on the log, Dublin was happy to pause briefly from his park adventures and enjoy a few cuddles. It was also a good place to brush up on his stay command, while I took several portraits of him.

Winter Dog Photo Session at a London park

As we made our way into the centre of the park, the bandstand came into view. Bright and striking against the soft grey of an overcast day, it added a little splash of colour to the photos.I always enjoy working around bandstands—there’s something nostalgic about them. Once a bustling part of Victorian park life, many have faded into history, though some, like this one, have been carefully restored and still serve as focal points for families and communities. On this day, there was no music playing, just the rustle of leaves and the gentle laughter of a couple who clearly adore their little dog. I worked from different angles, positioning myself to capture the whole structure as well as the couple and the dog from closer up.

For more information about bandstands, you can read a really interesting article here.

By this point, Dublin was getting a little tired so I suggested we find a bench and have a bit of a rest. This worked a treat! Dublin snuggled in between the couple and enjoyed lots of kisses and cuddles. Some of my favourite photos are from this bench. They are filled with love, connection and intimacy and show just how meaningful and deep our relationship with our pet can be.

This was a great opportunity to have some close up photos of Dublin’s face. He had such curious expressive eyes that I wanted to capture them up close. I’d hoped to get a photo of his paw resting in a hand, but he wasn’t quite comfortable with that. So we decided to improvise. His owner gently resting her hand next to his, which created a lovely timeless composition..

As the session came to a close, we ended on a light-hearted note, tossing some leaves in the air to see if Dublin might enjoy the spectacle. He was entirely unimpressed, closing his eyes as the leaves fluttered down, which made us all laugh.

End-of-Life Dog Photography

Sessions like these are incredibly special. They’re about celebrating the life of a beloved pet, acknowledging the joy they’ve brought, the love they’ve shared, and the space they hold in our hearts. If you’re considering photographs of your senior dog, or if you’re approaching a more difficult goodbye, please know you’re not alone.

I offer senior dog and end-of-life dog and pet photography, and have recently joined the Tilly Project - a non-profit organisation that helps connect pet owners with photographers across the world, and provides photography, educational, and grief resources for owners experiencing pet loss or bereavement.

London Pet Photographer | Couple & Pet Photo Session in Greenwich Park

A Spring Photoshoot In Greenwich Park

This March was unusually dry and gloriously sunny, the kind of weather that makes you want to spend every waking moment outdoors. The month started with cloudy, mild days which were perfect for outdoor Spring photoshoots. My month kicked off with a lovely couple and their dog for a photo session in Greenwich Park—one of my absolute favourite locations to photograph.

We met up early on a Sunday morning. The park was fairly quiet, and we decided to stay in the upper part of the park and avoid the touristy places near the observatory and the National Maritime Museum. It felt like we had this section of the park all to ourselves, which was ideal for family portraits..

A Playful Senior Pup Steals The Show

The star of the shoot was a ten year old Maltese x Jack Russell cross called Peanut - an energetic, confident little guy who was in action mode from the very beginning. Prior to the photoshoot, I chatted to his owner and enquired about his general mobility. The moment he arrived, it was clear that this was going to be a shoot full of movement, fun, and playful energy. Our first stop was a beautiful patch of spring daffodils, where I intended to take a few portrait shots, but despite the stunning blooms, he had more important things on his mind. I tried a few tricks to keep him still amongst the flowers, but he was far more interested in his favourite ball. And why not? His enthusiasm was contagious.

It didn’t take long for him to chase his ball twenty times, still with plenty of energy to spare. With a dog that active, we had to embrace the action shots, and I captured him darting through the grass with incredible speed, tail wagging in pure joy. As we made our way through the park, I directed the couple to a lovely tree-lined path. This narrow passageway, framed by two rows of bare trees, created the perfect backdrop, offering soft, warm tones and a sense of intimacy as the couple walked on.

Further down the path, I spotted a beautiful grove of large pine trees with drooping branches—something that resembled a natural amphitheatre. I couldn’t resist using this stunning structure as a backdrop for the family portraits. It gave the photos an almost magical quality, with the couple framed by nature’s grandeur while Peanut playfully wandered around them.

The London Skyline As The Perfect Backdrop

As we continued to explore the park, the view opened up to reveal the iconic Canary Wharf skyline. The early morning mist had given the skyline a soft, ethereal appearance, and it was the perfect backdrop for family portraits. The contrast between the lush green of the park and the towering, modern buildings in the distance created a striking visual effect.

With the couple and Peanut in the foreground, and the skyline as a gentle, misty backdrop, the photos captured a sense of serenity and connection. We got a few more action shots of Peanut running after his ball. I love how these images turned out - bursting with energy and joy! The backdrop, while stunning, never overshadowed the personalities in the frame; it only enhanced the story we were telling.

Cuddly Moments on a Picnic Blanket

After a few rounds of playful running, we moved to a quieter, more relaxed setting. We set up a picnic blanket in a beautiful space backed by still leafless branches, allowing the couple to settle down, relax, and enjoy some quiet time in the heart of Greenwich Park. Peanut, content and happy, curled up next to them, providing the perfect companion for these sweet shots. The trio looked effortlessly natural, lounging together, sharing a few cuddles and tender moments.

The view next door opened up towards a quaint little church in a tranquil part of the park, and I couldn’t resist a few more quiet shots of this gorgeous family. The couple snuggled up together, with Peanut between them, sharing quiet, tender moments. These were the shots that perfectly balanced the high-energy ones—the tranquil area of the park, relaxed doggy in the arms of his owners.

Individual Portraits with the Dog: Capturing the Bond

One of my favourite parts of every session is capturing individual portraits of the owners with their dog. These moments are always so personal and meaningful, as they reflect the unique bond shared between them. For this session, we found a quiet bench tucked away in a peaceful part of the park, and I took a few moments to photograph the couple individually with Peanut.

Dog Portraits Among the Spring Daffodils

One of the most memorable moments of the session was when we stopped by a patch of vibrant spring daffodils. The golden flowers provided a soft, cheerful backdrop for a few dog portraits of Peanut. Despite his energetic nature (and finding a patch to roll in), he paused just long enough for some stunning shots, with the daffodils swaying gently in the breeze around him. These portraits perfectly captured his lively spirit, yet also reflected the peace and beauty of the season.

Senior Dog Photography: Cherishing Every Moment

One of the things I love most about my work is having the opportunity to photograph senior dogs. They bring so much personality, wisdom, and love to a shoot. Peanut, at ten years old, had a wonderful mix of playful energy and quiet affection. His presence brought so much character to the photos, and I’m grateful to have captured these moments for his family.

Senior dogs hold a special place in their owners’ hearts, and a photoshoot like this is a beautiful way to celebrate those bonds.

If you're planning a shoot with your dog, especially a senior dog, it's a good idea to choose a location and setting that feels comfortable and familiar to both of you. Whether it's a park, a beach, or your own backyard, the goal is to create an environment that encourages natural moments and genuine expressions.

Winter Family and Pet Photo Session in Sussex | Surrey Family Photographer

At home family photoshoot in west Sussex

I had the great privilige of photographing a lovely family of three with their two dogs in the Sussex countryside last winter. Winter photoshoots can be a bit temperamental in terms of the weather, but we were lucky on a gorgeous February morning. The sun was shining, the light was beautiful and the company even better!

We started the photo session at home, spending some time in the garden while everyone got ready. This was a fantastic opportinity for the more shy members of the family to get to know me and relax in front of the camera. Both dogs were ready for action and I was keen to capture their unique personalities. One of the dogs was more extroverted and people oriented, whereas the other - a collie mix - was always on the ready, waiting to herd! I waited for a few moments of stillness and captured these portraits below.

A few negotiating steps and final touches - waterproofs, hats and gloves for a cold winter’s day, and we were all ready to venture out and explore the great outdoors!

I love photographing toddlers. They are always ready for an adventure and are so into everything! Muddy puddles, worms, bees, birds, playing hide and seek, you name it they’ll join in and investigate!

Outdoor Family Photoshoot

I often aim to get some together shots first thing when we go out. I find it takes the pressure off somewhat, knowing that I have some shots of all the family together. On this occasion, I took the opportunity to take a candid family portrait as we were walking down the road, the family chatting, unaware that I was taking photos. The resulting images are natural and spontanios, telling the story of this family’s weekend routine.

When photographing families with young children, I often suggest we meet first thing in the morning. Children are rested and in a good mood, parks empty so there is no worry photographs will be cluttered with people in the background. We can spend a good couple of hours outside and have a variety of backdrops for a really nice and varied set of images.

Action Photography for Active Dogs

While photographing families, I love to take some time during a break in the session, for instance when it is child’s snack time, and focus on the dogs. These two were only still when for short periods of time, so I had to work fast and get their portraits. They gave me run for my money, being constantly on the move and chinging directions. I was very impressed with my Canon EOS R5’s auto focus system, which kept focusing on the chosen dog even at high speeds and while dogs were chasing the ball and changing directions.

Family and Dog Photo Session in the Sussex countryside

We followed a loop which intersected Downs Link, a long distance route which follows two unused railway lines. Since trains stopped using these lines, the tracks have become a green corridor, providing an important lifeline for wildlife surrounded by arrable fields. Due to the combination of clay soil and flat ground, a lot of the land was flooded and colonised by a variety of waterfowl, egrets and harons, which provided a lot of interest and enterntainment.

After a long walk, and a wonderful morning spent playing, lauging, jumping in puddles and smelling flowers it was time to head home. It was a fantastic family photo session from beginnig to end, and I am really happy with how the photos turned out.

Family and Pet Photo Session with Teenagers in Wandsworth Common | London Family and Pet Photographer

Family Photoshoot with teenagers and puppy

I recently photographed a really sweet family with two teenagers & puppy in Wandsworth. My brief was to photograph the two teenagers and their teenage puppy, a 9 month old golden retriever called Juno, to be used as Christmas cards during the upcoming holidays.

Outdoor Family Photography

We decided to do a home-park split, starting with some relaxed outdoor photographs on Wandsworth Common and going back home for more cozy images. It was an overcast day, the light was lovely and the common was bursting with autumnal colours, giving a gorgeous warm tone to the photographs.

Dog Action Photogrpahy

We started this family and pet photoshoot with some together photos, but soon the 9 month old puppy became restless and needed to move a little. She loved chasing leaves so I thought an action shot of her jumping to catch leaves would be fun. My two helpers gathered a bunch of leaves and on coundown they threw the leaves up in the air and Juno excitedly went after them. I love the resulting image - it is full of energy and movemet, and to me symbolises the joy of autumn.

Wandsworth Common Family and Pet Photography

Since golden retrievers love water, and Wandsworth common happens to have a large pond with a beautiful little feature bridge, I decided to use it as a backdrop and take the next set of photographs there. The love between the two teens and Juno was evident, and so I wanted to capture all the cuddles and kisses which were given out in bountiful quantities.

Family Portrait Photography in London

The rustic bridge on Wandsworth common was the perfect place for a group family photo. The trees in the background provided a colourful, but plane background, and the gentle uphill raise provided a pleasing perspective. We paused here for a few moments, for me to take a few frames of the family together, and the children on their own with the puppy.

Portraits of Teenagers with Puppy

Before heading back home, I wanted to capture each teen with their beloved puppy, and also take some photos of them having fun together, running around in the field.

London Dog Photographer

Finally just a few portraits of June before it was time to leave the park. By this point she was tired from all the running around, and kept relatively still for me to take a few portraits of her in the dry leaves.

Family and Pet Photo Session at home in Wandsworth

It was then time to head back home, snuggle on the sofa and capture a few quiet moments. I very much enjoyed working with teenagers and their puppy, learning what their interests are and hearing about their ideas for potential photos. I thoroughly enjoyed this family and pet photo session, and I hope I meet this family again to see what they are up to in a few years time.

Puppy and Couple Photoshoot on Wimbledon Common | London Pet Photographer

Puppy Photography on Wimbledon Common

I love my job, but for this particular photo session, I had to pinch myself! Photographing a morkie puppy in the middle of autumn, on Wimbledon Common was totally dreamy!

Wedding Photography with a Dog

When this couple asked me to photograph their London wedding next year which will include their little bundle of fluff I immediately said yes! But who was going to wait until next May to meet this precious little girl? Pre-wedding photoshoots were certanly a thing a few years ago, which gave me an idea to use this as an excuse for a chance to photograph the puppy (and the wedding couple of course!). I really wanted to get some snuggly cuddly photos amongst the backdrop of beautiful autumnal colours and luckly everyone involved was up for it.

Autumnal Puppy Photoshoot

It was an overcast day, and we’ve arranged to meet at Wimbledon Common - the perfect setting for outdoor images. The Common provides so much variety in terms of paths, vegitation, colour, texture that I was spoilt for choice. Autumnal colours were absolutely gorgeous and the weather was palying the ball. Drying oak and beech leaves provided warmth (in terms of colour) and an opportunity to play chase leaves and play games.

Outdoor Puppy Photography

I tend to keep puppy photo sesssions to one hour, as puppies easily tire and need more rest than adult dogs. With a pocket full of treats and a positive attitude, I worked quickly to get a variety of poses and backdrops, including action shots of the puppy running, family portraits, playful shots and a few puppy portratis.

We finished shoot with a set of playful photos under a beech tree, after which it was truly a time for a puppy nap!

Surrey Dog Photographer in Buckinghamshere | Senior Dog Photo Session

A Fun Senior Dog Photo Session

In recent years, it has become increasingly popular for dog owners to wish to capture their beloved furry friends and their unique personalities through photography . Whether it's a couple with a playful puppy, a family with young children and a family dog, or an individual with a senior dog, dog photography encapsulates the love and bond we share with our canine companions.

I often get asked what type of photoshoots do I do the most. It really varies, from couples to families wanting family portraits, to weddings, christenings and parties. But a lot of my work has a thread that links it all together - dogs! This year, I photographed many individuals, couples and families with dogs, and have met some incredible people (and dogs) along the way.

Pet Photography Gift Vouchers make amazing gifts for dog owners and loved ones

One of the amazing jobs I had this autumn, was photographing these two lovely ladies. My client received a dog photography gift voucher from her best friend for a dog photo session, to capture the deep bond Polo the white german shephard and her owner shared. Polo is approaching her teens so it was the perfect time to have a senior dog photo session.

Outdoor dog & owner photoshoot

We met at home for a few casual shots in the garden, and have arrange to then move to Black Park Country Park, a Buckinghamshire Country Park on the outskirts of Slough. It was an overcast day, with the promise of sun breaking through. Polo was a superstar - up for pretty much anything I threw her way - from running to sitting in the brecon to climbing on logs. I tried to experiment a little bit with posing her as her white coat made such a beautiful contrast against the woodland backdrop.

I was also really keen to photograph Polo and her owner together, and really show the strong loving bond the two share together. Below is a collection of photogrtaphs from the session, I hope you like these as much as I do!

ARE YOU CONSIDERING Gifting a Dog Photography Gift Voucher?

Purchasing a dog photography gift certificate for somone is a beautiful way of getting a truly personal, meaningful and original gift. Here are a few reasons why it would make an amazing gift:

  1. Personalized Experience: Dog photography gift vouchers offer a personal touch that standard gifts often lack. They allow the recipient to choose a photography session tailored to their pet’s personality and needs. Whether it’s a home session, an outdoor adventure, or a themed shoot, the options are nearly endless.

  2. A Lasting Memory: Photographs capture fleeting moments that we often wish to hold onto forever. A professional photoshoot can immortalize a dog’s playful spirit, quirky expressions, and even those precious, quiet moments. Receiving a set of beautiful photographs captures memories that can be cherished for years, beautifully displayed in homes as art pieces or keepsakes.

  3. Quality Time: A dog photography session isn’t just about the end product; it’s about the experience. Spending time with a pet during a fun shoot creates joyful moments and strengthens the bond between owner and dog. It’s a chance to celebrate their relationship and create lasting memories together.

  4. Ideal for All Occasions: Dog photography gift vouchers are versatile gifts suitable for any occasion. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or simply as a thoughtful gesture—these vouchers work for any dog lover in your life. They’re especially great for new pet parents who want to commemorate their newest family member!

Dog and Couple Photo Session in Surrey - capturing joy

I recently had the absolute pleasure of photographing the sweetest couple and their ridiculously lovable cockapoo. From the moment we met, tit was clear that we were on the same page - enjoying easy laughter, playful banter, and that joyful chaos only a happy pup can bring. This session instantly became one of my all-time favourites.

At Home Dog Photo Session

The couple wanted to have the photo session at home, to have some privacy as well as old memories incorporated into the shoot. We started the season sitting on the grass and giving the pooch some love. I love setting the scene this way, because people have something to focus on, and instantly forget that I am there taking pictures. This lovable cockapoo enjoyed being cuddled so much, she was happy to sit still and receive as many cuddles as were coming her way. I then moved on to a few portraits of the dog, one of her sitting on the patio and one of her framed by the owners, giving a different feel to the photograph.

Creative Dog Photography

The second half of the session ended up being quite creative - trying things that might look really cool - or really rubbish. One of my favourite shots from this session was taken in during this time. I had an idea to take a bird’s eye view shot of the three of them (see the photo above). I found a convenient place to perch on, and asked everyone to move in what looked like a compositionally pleasing frame. It was then a game of get-the- dog’s-attention-without-the-dog-moving which took a few tries but finally managed to get the shot. It was well worth the effort, I absolutely love this shot and I hope you do too.

Action Photography to Capture Movement

Another photo I absolutely love from this session is the photo below of Ella running enthusiastically towards me, and the couple kissing in the background. This was the couple’s idea, they wanted a bit of a laugh and it absolutely worked. The photo portrays absolute joy - ears flapping, eyes wide open, tongue showing, tail up in the air! Such a happy memory!
