What to Wear for a Newborn Family Photoshoot at Home

One of the most common questions I receive before a newborn photography session is, "What should we wear?"

The good news is that there is no need to buy a whole new wardrobe or dress formally. The most successful newborn photographs are usually the simplest. The focus should always be on your connection as a family rather than the clothes you are wearing.

My photography style is natural and relaxed, so I generally recommend clothing that feels comfortable, timeless and true to your personality.

Choose Soft, Neutral Colours

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully in the home environment and help create a calm, cohesive look.

Colours that work particularly well include:

Cream
Beige
Oatmeal
Soft grey
Light blue
Sage green
Dusty pink
Warm earthy tones

These shades complement most home interiors and keep the attention on your family rather than your clothing.

Avoid Large Logos and Busy Patterns

While there are no strict rules, large logos, bold graphics and busy patterns can draw attention away from the people in the photograph.

Simple clothing tends to create a more timeless result that will still look beautiful many years from now.

If several family members are being photographed together, try to choose colours that complement one another rather than matching exactly.

Comfort Is More Important Than Perfection

Newborn sessions are relaxed and baby-led. You may spend time sitting on the sofa, cuddling your baby on the bed or moving around the house.

For this reason, comfortable clothing is often the best choice.

Soft knitwear, flowing dresses, linen shirts and simple tops tend to photograph wonderfully while allowing you to move naturally throughout the session.

What Should Mum Wear?

Many new mothers are still recovering physically after giving birth, so comfort and confidence are key.

Loose-fitting dresses, oversized knitwear, flowing tops and comfortable fabrics often work beautifully. Choose something that makes you feel like yourself rather than something you think you "should" wear.

The most important thing is feeling relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.

What Should Dad Wear?

Simple is usually best.

A neutral-coloured shirt, lightweight knit or plain T-shirt works beautifully. Avoid large branding, sports logos or clothing with lots of text.

The goal is to create a look that feels timeless and allows the focus to remain on your family's connection.

What About Siblings and Dogs?

For young children, comfort is just as important. Soft, neutral clothing that allows them to play and move freely works particularly well.

If your dog will be included in the photographs, there is usually very little preparation needed. A quick brush before the session and a clean collar can help them look their best.

Remember What Matters Most

When families look back at their photographs years later, they rarely remember exactly what they wore.

What they remember are the tiny fingers wrapped around theirs, the sleepy newborn cuddles, the proud smiles and the joy of welcoming a new baby into the family.

Choose clothing that feels comfortable, natural and authentic, and your photographs will never go out of style.
